The primary story follows the conflict between Harry Potter, and his arch nemesis, Lord Voldermort, who is trying to overthrow the ministry of magic, and achieve eternal life, then subjugate all non-magic people (muggles).

In this way, Pratchett can parody classic works, and satirize real world issues.

After this, J. R. R. Tolkien went to write the Lord Of The Rings. That one was even more popular, and received greater acclaim. However, I do not suggest that story for a family to read because it is simply too long. A tedious reading experience, sadly.
